Little big talents: 13-year-old Angolan becomes two-time jiu-jitsu world champion

Alíria da Conceição may be 'small' in age, but she is certainly 'big' in talent. At just 13 years old, the Angolan won the gold medal at the Jiu-Jitsu World Championship held in Abu Dhabi (UAE), thus becoming two-time world champion in the modality.

Fighting jiu-jitsu in her Brazilian style (ne-waza), gold is nothing new for the Angolan woman. The athlete had already won the most important medal in an event of its kind, also in the United Arab Emirates, in 2017.

Álvaro da Conceição, father of the athlete, told Angop that this title is the result of the hard work of Alíria but also of her parents, coach, school and teammates.

He referred to the difficulties felt by the athlete, stating that this is a sport that requires a strong mentality and respect for sports and team spirit.

Alíria da Conceição was born in Luanda, on the 28th of July 2008, but currently resides in Lisbon, the Portuguese capital, since 2018. She is attending the eighth year of teaching and belongs to the Youngzilion club, having already held several national and international titles. She won gold medals at the 'Open 40 Years of National Independence', at the 'Life Style Jiu-Jitsu Angola' tournament and at the World Cup qualifying test. She also won the gold medal at the first children's and youth festival 'Team Club', at the eighth internal tournament 'Aliança do Tatame' and at the Portuguese jiu-jitsu championship.

Angola also participated with senior athletes in this edition of the world championship, having the gold medal of Hélio Caio (-55 kg) and two silver medals by Heliane (+63 kg) and Hélder Mangueira (120 kg) to be registered.
