The minister for Economic Coordination, Manuel Nunes Júnior, welcomed this Tuesday the Portuguese presence at the Luanda International Fair (FILDA), which he considered "a manifestation of confidence in the country", despite the constraints still imposed by the pandemic.

Manuel Nunes Júnior toured the fair, after speaking at the opening ceremony of FILDA, and stopped by the Portugal stand, where he took a guided tour by the Portuguese ambassador, Pedro Pessoa e Costa.

At FILDA, which is holding its 36th edition this year after an interruption due to covid-19, Portugal has the largest international representation, bringing together 17 companies, which have joined the Agency for Investment and Foreign Trade of Portugal (AICEP), in a joint presence.

In total, 558 exhibitors from 15 countries are present at FILDA, of which 500 are Angolan.

During the minister's visit to the Portugal stand, Pedro Pessoa e Costa pointed out the sectors of activity of the different companies - linked to construction, agri-food industry, metalworking and information technologies - many of which have been present in Angola for several years, highlighting the resilience of the national presence in the African country.

Speaking to Lusa, Nunes Júnior underlined that, more than a manifestation of the strength of the Portuguese business community, it is a manifestation of will.

"What we see is, above all, will and manifestation of confidence in the country", highlighted the government official, stressing that small and medium-sized companies are fundamental for creating business and employment.

"The foreign countries that are here are a demonstration that, even in adverse situations, they still trust Angola", he considered.

Asked about the impact of the new variant of covid-19, Ómicron, the Minister of State for Economic Coordination said "it is still not very well studied", hoping that "it will not have such a great influence in the world as in 2020".

"We are waiting for scientists to tell us what the implications of this new variant are", Nunes Júnior continued, adding: "we are going to do everything in our power so that Angola's economic recovery takes place next year."

The minister said that he still has no doubts that businessmen are now better prepared to face a crisis, after what has been done in the last three years in terms of stabilizing the Angolan economy, in particular issues related to the exchange rate.

"Today, our exchange rate has stabilized, since last year, and at times the kwanza, the national currency, even gains value in relation to the main international currencies. This means that we had a great concern, which was the foreign exchange market, is normalized and this for foreign investors is very important, in terms of confidence", said the responsible for the Economic Coordination.

Despite the official inauguration being this Tuesday, at the FILDA pavilion, located in the Luanda-Bengo Special Economic Zone, many exhibitors were still this morning putting the finishing touches on their 'stands' without being able to avoid the discomfort caused by the lack of air conditioning in a too hot space, where they will stay until Saturday.

Companies from 15 countries from various sectors are represented at FILDA, but the lack of information about the exhibitors and their origins leaves visitors at a loss.

The fair takes place this year under the motto "Technology as Support for the Development of Agribusiness and Industry" and with thematic days, this Tuesday being the Oil one, followed by days dedicated to Sonangol (Wednesday), Portugal (Thursday), Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP) on Friday and, finally, on Saturday, Angola.

Among the exhibitors, institutional, central and local administration have a significant weight, as well as the public media, the banking and insurance sector, large Angolan companies such as Unitel and Sonangol, multinationals such as Sika, as well as some protagonism to the Chinese presence.
