Ship ‘D. Carlos I’ will carry out a hydrographic survey of the port of Luanda

The Deputy Secretary of State and of National Defense, Jorge Seguro Sanches, announced that the ship “D. Carlos I” will carry out a hydrographic survey of the port of Luanda as part of Portuguese cooperation with Angola.

Seguro Sanches, who was speaking in Luanda, at the end of a three-day visit to Angola, highlighted Portugal's interest in strengthening cooperation in the field of Defense, and the final phase of work for the signing of a new Framework Program for Defense is underway. The Portuguese official indicated that cooperation with Angola in the field of Defense has been going on for 25 years and that the intention is to strengthen ties.

"We are in a phase of strengthening cooperation with Angola and other African countries", highlighted Jorge Seguro Sanches, adding that the minister of National Defense, João Gomes Cravinho, wants to "leverage the relationship between the two peoples, the two nations", a closer relationship which is facilitated by the common language.

"The work is being finalized and ready to be signed by the two defense ministers as soon as it is opportune so that, in the next framework, we can have a work to deepen this relationship", he added.

The secretary of State highlighted the "extraordinary work" of the Portuguese military in these projects, which was recognized in the contacts he had in Angola, namely in the trip to Ambriz (north of Luanda) where the marine base is located.

The visit also served to review the status of projects and launch the new Framework Program for Cooperation, which covers areas such as training, maritime security, cyber defense and hydrography.

"One of the naval forces we have, the hydrographic vessel 'D. Carlos I', which left Lisbon a few weeks ago, will be in Luanda very soon where it will participate and work with the Angola Hydrographic Institute in order to carry out the hydrographic survey from the port of Luanda," Sanches said, saying that this is one of the goals for 2022.

The secretary of State also praised the role of Angola, which already provides training to other countries, including some in which the Portuguese military is involved.

Refusing to mention the amounts involved in Portuguese cooperation, Jorge Seguro Sanches stated that "there is no extraordinary cost" and that more than large financial volumes, Portugal is interested in working with "human values".

The official praised Angola's work in controlling the covid-19 pandemic, recalling that Portugal is also participating in this effort, having already donated 750,000 vaccines against the new coronavirus. "We will soon reach a million," he said.
