King of the Tchokwe peoples wants to enhance cultural identity and recover missing pieces

The king of Lundas defends the creation of a museum to preserve the historical and cultural memory of the Tchokwe peoples, which would house some pieces, which are currently missing, heritage he wants to recover.

:

"We have already presented the project to the provincial government, but we still don't have an answer," he told Lusa Muatchissengue Wa Tembo, lamenting that the historical and cultural capital of this people, Itengo, in Lunda Sul, 50 kilometers from the capital Saurimo, is abandoned.

A situation that he attributes to former governors who were managing the provinces (Lunda Norte and Lunda Sul) and created "other figures" who usurped the power of traditional authority.

"Our cultural identity is disappearing, respect for culture and Muatchissengue is disappearing", its royal title, he lamented, stressing the importance of creating a museum to "archive cultural history" Tchokwe, particularly with regard to the kingdom, and which would be complementary to the existing museum in Dundo (capital of Lunda Norte), founded in the colonial era and which brings together various artefacts and ethnographic pieces related to this people.

Muatchissengue also lamented the disappearance of several Tchokwe pieces and sculptures, whose whereabouts are unknown, asking for more protection for these works.

He also expressed his intention to obtain support to investigate the fate of the pieces and find a way to rescue them: "we have information that many of them are in Portugal, but the people cannot locate these pieces and negotiate for them to return", he said.

During the period of armed conflict, pieces were also stolen from the Dundo museum, which were never recovered.

The sovereign also spoke about the need to provide training and create a school where Tchokwe knowledge can be transmitted.

"We also want to train sculptors and other culture makers so that the arts are not lost. For that, we need support, research, we need to find those that still exist and create a school for Tchokwe artisans. Sooner or later we're going to lose these people and if we don't find them now, to teach their knowledge and continue, then we won't have art makers anymore, only improvised things," he concluded.
