Located in Largo do Kinaxixi, in Luanda, the statue of Queen Njinga Mbande, as the name suggests, is a tribute to this queen.
It was in 2002 that the aforementioned monument to Queen Njinga Mbande was erected, under the guidance of José Eduardo dos Santos, former President of the Republic, as part of the 27th anniversary of national independence.
It is important to note that the statue was removed from the site due to rehabilitation works. However, the monument has now returned to its site. Ten years after its removal, in October 2024, the statue returned to the square.
Queen Njinga Mbande reigned the Dongo Kingdom between 1624 and 1626, as well as founding and reigning the Matamba Kingdom between 1631 and 1663, the year in which she died.
Having reigned for more than 30 years, Njinga Mbande is also remembered for her political and military exploits, as she fought and negotiated for her people.
