Eugénio Dal Corso, the second cardinal in the history of the Angolan Catholic Church, has died

The second cardinal in the history of the Catholic Church of Angola and bishop emeritus of the diocese of Benguela, Eugénio Dal Corso, died on Sunday in Italy due to illness, Vatican News announced.

Eugênio Dal Corso was born in Grezzana, Italy, where he was born on May 16, 1939, and became a priest on July 7, 1963, joining the Congregation of the Poor Servants of Divine Providence.

After 11 years of mission in Argentina, in 1986, he asked to leave for Angola having directed the seminary of the diocese of Uige, and was subsequently appointed, in 1991, provincial superior of his Order in Angola.

In December 1995, Eugénio Dal Corso was appointed by Pope John Paul II coadjutor bishop of Saurimo, becoming in 1997 the bishop of Saurimo, having in 2008 been transferred by Pope Benedict XVI to the diocese of Benguela.

In 2018, Eugénio Dal Corso resigned his position due to age restrictions and, in September 2019, he was elevated to cardinal by Pope Francis.

The current bishop of the diocese of Benguela, Francisco Jaca, highlighted all his work for the people of Angola and beyond.

"Dom Eugénio Cardinal Dal Corso was a missionary in Argentina for many years, he was a missionary in Angola in several dioceses such as Uige, Luanda, he was bishop of Saurimo and ended his episcopal ministry here in our diocese, for 10 years he was bishop of Benguela", cited.

The Political Bureau of the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) lamented the death of Eugénio Dal Corso in a statement, conveying feelings of condolence to the Episcopal Conference of Angola and São Tomé and his family.

Eugénio Dal Corso will be buried on Thursday, in Verona, Italy.
