Adalberto Costa Júnior was speaking to journalists after the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) had two motions rejected that it had submitted on Thursday morning before the start of the plenary session, prompting opposition deputies to leave the room.
The motions at issue were related to the dismissal of the dissolution of the mixed parliamentary group formed by the Social Renewal Party (PRS) and the National Liberation Front of Angola (FNLA), as it violated the rules of the National Assembly, and to the composition of the CNE, the distribution of seats of which is contested by UNITA, which were rejected by the parliamentary majority.
Upon leaving, the president of UNITA told journalists that the MPLA had demonstrated that "in order to maintain power it needs control of the CNE, control of the TC", accusing the party that supports the executive, in power since independence in 1975, of having an attitude that was "unethical, against the law and against the law".
"It left us no alternative", said Adalberto Costa Júnior, accusing the MPLA of wanting to impose the distribution of CNE commissioners "because it knows that this is the only way to survive in power".
The leader stated that UNITA deputies decided to take office after the elections in 2022 (which they considered fraudulent), "in respect of the popular vote" and in order to improve the functioning of the institutions, serving the country.
"By this means, we are saying that the institutions do not want to act within the law, this is a clear sign of desperation, that without the CNE and without the TC, the MPLA is not in a position to maintain power", criticised Adalberto Costa Júnior.
The National Assembly held its 1st extraordinary plenary meeting this Thursday to discuss and vote on several points including laws relating to the regime applicable to price regulation, the legal regime that defines electromobility and the controversial draft resolution that approves the adjustment of the composition of the CNE that UNITA is contesting.
Last week, the National Assembly approved this draft resolution regarding the designation of the number of representatives of political parties with parliamentary seats in the CNE, but without the largest opposition party that abandoned the vote because it did not agree with the distribution of commissioners proposed for the CNE.
