UNITA leader: legalization of PRA-JA Servir Angola had “political motivations” to destabilize the Patriotic Front

The president of UNITA, Adalberto Costa Júnior, said this Tuesday that the legalization of PRA-JA Servir Angola had political motivations, allegedly to destabilize the United Patriotic Front (FPU), guaranteeing that the opposition platform “is stable”.

The president of the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) said that he was calm about the legalization of Abel Chivukuvuku's party, a member of the FPU, stating that whoever is able to propose legalization should be legalized.

"We have always understood that whoever is able to propose legalization should be legalized and what we saw was a subterfuge, the PRA-JA had all the conditions to obtain its legalization many years ago, political reasons led to its being prevented, political reasons too (contributed to its legalization) as the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) itself is now confessing", he responded to Lusa this Tuesday.

In statements at the National Assembly, where this Tuesday the President, João Lourenço, presented a message on the State of the Nation, the leader of UNITA denied that the legalization of the PRA-JA would mean the end of the FPU.

"I heard lawyers say that legalisation now means the end of UNITA's parliamentary group and we are trying to understand what motivated the legalisation. It was not legality once again, but rather the regime thinking it could gain some advantage from it. The FPU is stable", he assured.

Last week, the Constitutional Court announced the legalisation of PRA-JA Servir Angola, a decision that puts an end to a process that had been dragging on since 2019, the year the project was presented, which was ultimately rejected by the court in 2020, forcing a four-year wait for a new attempt at legalisation.

This new political group is part of the FPU, a platform created in the 2022 general elections, led by UNITA, coordinated by Adalberto Costa Júnior, assisted by Abel Chivukuvuku and the president of the Democratic Bloc, Filomeno Vieira Lopes.

This Tuesday, Adalberto Costa Júnior denied that the legitimization of the PRA-JA is the "death" of the FPU, insisting on the calm within the platform, which elected 90 deputies in 2022.

"We are calm, the regime, with its programs, always has one purpose: divide and conquer, it has always been like that, history has always proven us and we all know what is happening within that party, a serious crisis", he said.

Regarding his expectations regarding João Lourenço's speech to the Nation, Costa Júnior criticized the current socioeconomic reality of the country, marked by "extreme poverty, hunger and misery", asking for a "real x-ray" with solutions to the aforementioned problems.

The National Assembly member also lamented what he considers to be a "great lack of institutional dialogue in the country", asking João Lourenço to "reconsider" the need for the country to have local authorities.

"I hope that we can do better in the future for the good of the country and who knows if in this speech we will hear people say that we will have local authorities next year, that they will reconsider and that we will prioritize the fight against hunger, the fight against extreme poverty, that we will stop cutting up the country with scissors, that would be good for all of us", he concluded.
