Motorcycle taxi drivers in Luanda will be identified using vests with the colors of each municipality

The Provincial Government of Luanda (GPL) will register motorcycle taxi drivers in the capital, who will be identified by a different colored vest for each municipality and will have an identification code.

The information was transmitted to motorcycle taxi drivers' associations and cooperatives by the governor of Luanda, Manuel Homem, in a meeting with the class as part of the Traffic Planning Program.

At the meeting, Manuel Homem mentioned that GPL monitors the activity of motorcycle taxis and is "very interested" in ensuring that this work is carried out in the different municipalities in an organized manner.

Last September, the GPL announced some measures that restricted the circulation of motorcycle taxi drivers on the capital's main roads, a situation that, as Manuel Homem highlighted, "generated some uproar", because the commission, "after listening to the concerns of associations, cooperatives, of those who invest in the segment", did not get the message across "in a convenient way".

"We are carrying out a broad awareness program, but more than raising awareness we are carrying out a program to readjust our activity", highlighted Manuel Homem.

The governor of Luanda stressed that conditions are being created in relation to circulation on certain roads, reiterating that the program "at no time aimed to hinder motorcycle taxi activity", one of the most popular forms of transport among Angolans.

"The concern arises from the analysis of statistics. Statistics from Luanda tell us that in traffic, in this first half of the year, we had over 300 deaths on the roads in Luanda and our understanding is that each death is a concern", said the government official, remembering that these numbers refer to deaths at the sites of accidents and leave out the injured who could end up dying in hospitals.

The provincial government identified some constraints, according to Manuel Homem, some of which are the responsibility of the Government, namely the improvement of some roads, lighting and signage.

There is also a need "to train motorcycle taxi drivers more and better", many of them with "little knowledge of traffic rules", said Manuel Homem, announcing the creation of training rooms for motorcycle taxi activity in all municipalities in Luanda .

"We immediately have an entrepreneur academy in Benfica, on the highway, and in this academy we already have space available and we will coordinate with Amotrang [sector association] so that we can give this space the starting point to start training our motorcycle taxi drivers in Luanda", he added, also promising to improve the quality of services at provincial and municipal level in the motorbike licensing process, recognizing "that there is still some difficulty".

"We are going to start a process of assigning identifiers to motorbikes that carry out motorcycle taxi activities, because we also know that other people's friends often pretend to be motorcycle taxi drivers", he added.
