With 1.º de Maio de Benguela, Rui Araújo became two-time Angolan champion, winning Girabola in 1983 and 1985, he won the Angola Cup in football on three occasions, 1982, 1983 and 2007, and was one of the main responsible due to the fact that 1.º de Maio, in 1984, was the first Angolan team to reach the quarter-finals of an African competition, at the time, the African Champion Clubs' Cup.
As a sports director, he also won the 1st edition of the Angolan Super Cup, in 1985.
