Tília Ackson from Tanzania elected new president of the Inter-Parliamentary Union

The Tanzanian candidate, Tília Ackson, was elected this Friday as the new president of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (UIP), with 172 votes, replacing the Portuguese candidate, Duarte Pacheco, in the position.

Tília Ackson competed with three other candidates: Adji Kanoute, from Senegal, who obtained 59 votes, Catherine Hara, from Malawi, with 61 votes and Marwa Hagi, from Somalia, with 11 votes.

Tília Ackson's election took place during the 147th general assembly of the UIP, which is taking place in Luanda.

In her speech, Tília Ackson thanked her for the trust placed in her, a position she accepts "with all the humility and responsibilities it implies".

The new president of the UIP thanked and congratulated her opponents for the "very worthy" campaign they carried out.

"I want to reaffirm my commitment to work side by side with all of you, to make the UIP the most transparent and responsible organization," she said.

To the outgoing president, Tília Ackson said she counted on her support to ensure the progress of the UIP, thanking her for her mandate and for coordinating her election, assuring the delegates that she will "render justice" to the organization.
