In addition to boosting the first dose of the polio vaccine, a vitamin A supplement was also introduced for children aged six months to five years, the Luanda provincial health director told Angop.

Still according to Manuel Duarte Varela, the target population for this campaign was 1,440,306, however 1,495,550 children were vaccinated, three percent more than stipulated. “We are satisfied with the results obtained in this campaign, which was better than the first, with higher percentages”, stated the person in charge.

The second phase of the Polio Vaccination Campaign - which took place four weeks after the first - mobilized more than 12 thousand people, including vaccinators, volunteers, military personnel and members of associations. The teams were present at strategic points such as daycare centers, churches, fairs, etc.

According to the Secretary of State for Public Health, Carlos Alberto Pinto de Sousa, all children under five years of age - even if they have already been vaccinated - must receive two doses of the polio vaccine again to reach a level of high immunity throughout the community.

The official also called for the basic vaccination schedule to be completed for all children before they turn one year of age. Remember that the National Routine Vaccination Calendar includes 10 vaccines, which prevent 13 childhood diseases.

All children who were not vaccinated during the campaign can go to a health unit for this purpose.
