UNDP defends investment, innovation and protection to reduce multidimensional poverty in Angola

The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in Angola said this Wednesday that multidimensional poverty in the country is centered on education, health, quality of life and employment, advocating investment, innovation and protection.

Difficulties in accessing primary health services, education, electricity and the supply of drinking water, said the UNDP, continue to have an impact on populations.

UNDP economist Lorenzo Mancini defended that investment, innovation and protection should be the way forward for Angola to improve its Human Development Index (HDI), having praised some actions taken by the Angolan authorities in this area.

Lorenzo Mancini, who presented the Human Development Report 2021 this Wednesday, at a meeting promoted in Luanda by the UNDP in partnership with the Ministry of Economy and Planning, defended solid approaches for the promotion of human development in Angola.

On health, he exemplified the problem of malaria in Angola, the main cause of deaths and hospitalizations in hospitals, considering that the fight against the disease must be systemic.

"With attention to primary health care, nutrition and basic sanitation. A systemic way is needed to eradicate malaria and not just kill the mosquito", he stressed.

Regarding the protection axis, the official listed macroprudential policies, social protection, access to social services, protection of human rights and the removal of barriers to participation as actions that should be developed in Angola.

For the UNDP expert, planning, financing and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are mechanisms that should serve to finance national development.

A systemic and multidimensional approach, resilience to climate change, investment, innovation, protection and financing are the assumptions that, in Lorenzo Mancini's opinion, must be materialized.

The world HDI report 2021-2022 states that Angola remains in the group of countries with the medium HDI. The country occupies the 148th position among the 191 countries and territories considered in the document.

The Secretary of State for Planning, Milton Reis, mentioned, in his opening speech, that the data from the world HDI report for Angola are very encouraging and result from actions developed in recent years by the Executive.

Perspectives on human development in Angola was the theme of this meeting, which gave rise to a debate panel that brought together members of civil society and UNDP representatives in the country.
