Luanda's governor, Manuel Homem, was this Saturday elected the first provincial secretary of the MPLA in that province, with 1496 votes in favor and 17 against, Angop reported.

Manuel Homem, 43 years old, member of the Political Bureau of the ruling party in Angola and former minister of Telecommunications, Information Technologies and Social Communication replaces Bento Sebastião Bento, after the MPLA suffered its first defeat in the province of Luanda, in the elections of 24 of August.

The Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA), which has governed the country since independence in 1975, won two of the five deputies for the Luanda circle, with the other three mandates won by the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA).

According to Angop, of the 1525 delegates present at the 8th extraordinary conference of the MPLA Provincial Committee in Luanda, 17 voted against, with seven null votes and five blank votes.

The party's vice president, Luísa Damião, urged the new MPLA leader in Luanda "to have patience, persistence and proactivity" and considered it essential "to evaluate and attack the problems and not the men", says the Angolan agency.

She also said that the results of the fifth general election "recommend the strengthening of ideological political work, marketing and the domain of social networks".

Speaking, the outgoing first secretary, Bento Bento, "stated that the political logic advises that the trust of the people has to do with the satisfaction of their needs", writes to Angop.
