The news, published on the official page of the Presidency of the Republic on Facebook, reports on the death of Sérgio Luther Rescova early in the evening "due to illness", allegedly covid-19, according to the press.

"It was with the deepest consternation that I have just learned. I offer my most sincere condolences to the family of the failed member, in my name, in that of my family and the entire Executive," wrote President João Lourenço on the page.

In a statement read that night on TPA news, public television, the Political Bureau (BP) of the MPLA Central Committee also expressed its "deep feeling of dismay" when it learned of the governor's death.

"The political party path and the sense of state of Rescova is a source of pride for Angolans and a living example for all young people who love Angola and serve their mother country with commitment and a sense of mission", stressed the MPLA BP, addressing the feelings of grief to the bereaved family.

Luther Rescova "performed with honor and dedication the most honorable functions in the MPLA and in the Angolan state" with emphasis on the positions in the BP and in the Central Committee, the first national secretary of JMPLA (youth organization of the MPLA), from 2009 to 2019 and deputy to national assembly by the MPLA.

The party leader was born on May 16, 1980 in Damba (province of Uíge), joined the MPLA in 1998 and until the time of his death he held the post of governor of Uíje, since May this year, after governing Luanda between January 2019 and May 2020.

The press indicates that the reason for the death was covid-19. Rescova was reportedly transferred from Uíge province to Luanda and was admitted to Clínica Girassol, according to Novo Jornal.
