ExxonMobil goes looking for oil in the unexplored Namibe Basin

The National Agency of Petroleum, Gas and Biofuels (ANPG) signed this Wednesday three Service Contracts with Risk with ExxonMobil and Sonangol that allow the increase of the maritime exploration area (offshore of Angola) in an additional 17,800 square kilometers.

The concessionaire states, in a statement sent to VerAngola, that these agreements will make it possible to identify the potential of hydrocarbon resources existing in the Namibe Basin. It is recalled that until now this was an unexplored maritime area.

Deep water blocks 30, 44 and 45 are located between 50 and 100 kilometers from the coast, in a water depth that varies between 1500 and more than 3000 meters in depth.

The chairman of the Board of Directors of ANGP, Paulino Jerónimo, welcomed the signing of these contracts and underlined the advantages of ExxonMobil's presence in the Namibe Basin, which will allow "to deepen geological knowledge, as well as explore the potential of hydrocarbons there. existing".

The official also stressed that "the success of the work carried out in Angola by international operators, many of whom have already consolidated their presence in the country, is an extremely important factor for the development and credibility of the Angolan oil sector".

Andre Kostelnik, director-general of ExxonMobil in Angola, said that the company is committed to working with the Government and the ANPG to identify the border areas with the greatest potential for resources, applying its experience. "These new concessions are the result of the long success history of our exploration and production activities in Angola", he says.

ExxonMobil is the operator of blocks 30, 44 and 45, with an associative participation of 60 percent, with Sonangol Pesquisa e Produção holding an associative participation of 40 percent.

Sebastião Gaspar Martins, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Sonangol, considered "the extension of prospecting and exploration activities to an area that has hitherto been unexplored in Angola to be extremely important, but that everything indicates has the potential to increase hydrocarbon production".

"Being able to participate in this challenging project, we are excited and launch challenges that we will surely be up to", concluded the official.
