Carlos de São Vicente businessman's wife complains of "judicial and media massacre"

Irene Neto, daughter of the first Angolan president, Agostinho Neto, and wife of businessman Carlos de São Vicente, claimed this Friday victim of a "judicial and media massacre" and appealed for the release of her husband, who said he was "unjustly imprisoned".

In a statement sent to Lusa, the doctor, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) regrets the lack of solidarity of her party comrades and claims to be currently without means to pay their daily expenses, after seeing their accounts frozen.

"I have my bank accounts frozen. I'm without means to pay my daily expenses. The revenge on me and my family has reached a point very close to fascist practices of sad memory," he laments, adding that he will not surrender "to blackmail, abuse of power, to a justice travesty of political police.

As for her husband, who is being held in custody in Viana for suspicion of embezzlement, money laundering and influence peddling, involving a $900 million account also frozen in Switzerland, he says he is "an honorable and law-abiding citizen of Angola" who is imprisoned only for having had "success.

"The judicial and media massacre on my family, and particularly on my person, represents, without any doubt, an intolerable interference of the political power in the judicial power and is also an unnecessary petty revenge," recriments Agostinho Neto's daughter.

Irene Neto accuses the authorities of feeding "a media circus" against her family and says that her husband is the victim of a trial "artificially created and fed by well identified sectors.

The wife of Carlos de São Vicente states that her husband has always managed his companies in the financial sector, tourism and real estate "in compliance with the rules in force in Angola and the international market" and stresses that so far he has not been accused of anything.

"However, the authorities, who have a duty to protect the secrecy of justice, are feeding a media circus that represents the trial and conviction of Carlos de São Vicente, in the public square," he criticizes.

"The preventive imprisonment of citizen Carlos de São Vicente is, in fact, the execution of a sentence sentenced in the populist court, presided over by agents of the Public Ministry," continues the former president's daughter, stating that she did not divorce the businessman.

"We are more united than ever and we both suffer the same grief. We never imagined that a businessman could be arrested, just for being successful in his business activities", writes Irene Neto in the statement.

She also considers that Carlos de São Vicente is unjustly imprisoned.

"He cannot practice the alleged criminal activity, because he has already been confiscated all his assets, even his family home. He cannot run away because his passport has expired. Being at liberty or, for absurdity, under house arrest does not cause any social alarm. So release him immediately," he appeals, holding the holders of the sovereign bodies responsible for everything that happens to the husband in prison.

The doctor and former MPLA member regrets not having received "even a word" of support and solidarity from her comrades, "making honourable exceptions" and considers that "this silence does not dignify Angola's greatest historical party.

Carlos São Vicente has been detained since September 21 for suspected embezzlement, corruption, money laundering and influence peddling, as well as receiving undue advantage and economic participation in business.

At stake is an investigation involving a bank account of Carlos São Vicente frozen in Switzerland on suspicions of money laundering with about $900 million, according to a Swiss blog that follows judicial matters in that country.

The Angolan judicial authorities have already ordered the seizure of several buildings belonging to the AAA group, which is being investigated in Switzerland for embezzlement and money laundering.

Among these were the AAA buildings, the IU and IKA hotels, located throughout the country, and the IRCA building on Amilcar Cabral Street in Luanda. More recently, the Adli Building and Thyke Hotel (Tower) in Luanda were seized, a building adjacent to the Macon bus terminal, in the vicinity of the AAA group claims center and the buildings Nos. 29, 30, 31, 32, 33 and 34 located in the Sodimo condominium on Praia do Bispo.

The National Asset Recovery Service of the PGR also seized the 49 percent minority stake of AAA Activos in Standard Bank Angola, where the entrepreneur is a non-executive director, having requested suspension of functions for the duration of the process.

AAA, led by Carlos São Vicente, is one of the largest Angolan business groups, operating in the insurance and hotel sectors.

The AAA insurance company held the insurance monopoly of the oil business for about ten years.

In a recent interview with an Angolan radio station, Isabel dos Santos, daughter of former president José Eduardo dos Santos, said she "annoyed" many people by cancelling contracts that harmed the state oil company Sonangol, among them the insurance companies, whose costs she said were much higher than market values, estimating to have saved 70 percent by choosing another company.
