Catamaran breakdown leaves the city of Soyo without connection to Cabinda

At least 70 passengers are stranded in the city of Soyo, in the north of the country, due to the breakdown of a catamaran that was connecting that city and the province of Cabinda, an official source said.

The information was transmitted this Friday by the Secretary of State for Transport, Jorge Bengue, who reported that the vessel had run aground in recent days due to a fault in one of the propellers, and he regretted the constraints.

Jorge Bengue assured that within three days the coastal shipping vessel would be ready to continue its journey to Cabinda, mentioning that the affected passengers are receiving support from the operating company and the municipal administration of Soyo.

"It is indeed an embarrassing situation, we regret it and promise to reverse this situation as quickly as possible within three days", said the minister on the sidelines of the fourth meeting of the Interministerial Commission of the Privatisation Programme.

Several citizens, quoted by Angop, complained this week of constraints as a result of the shutdown of the catamaran, which has been the only means of transporting people and goods on this route, after the Soyo/Cabinda air link was discontinued.

Secil Marítima, the company that manages the catamarans that run the Luanda/Soyo/Cabinda route and vice versa, reported that its vessels are undergoing technical repairs and that trips and ticket sales are suspended on all routes, according to a statement dated Wednesday.
