The Portuguese, who had won the previous day against the USA (10-2), sealed their victory over Angola with goals from Gonçalo Alves (3 minutes, from a direct free kick), Hélder Nunes (28) and João Rodrigues (33 and 49), to secure their place in the quarter-finals, with the first place in the group now up for grabs, with Argentina, also 100 percent victorious.
The match, which began with a minute's silence for the victims of the fires in Portugal, saw Gonçalo Alves open the scoring with a free kick in the third minute of play.
From then on, the game became a bit of a stalemate, with both teams very closed off and not creating many clear-cut opportunities, except for a shot by João Rodrigues that hit the crossbar of Angolan Francisco Veludo's goal in the 13th minute.
Angola was gaining the upper hand and gaining ground in the match, with Portugal more 'stuck' with a circulation of the ball that was not very effective in reaching the opposing goal, with José Miranda and Xavi Cardoso allowing Veludo to make saves.
Furthermore, the uninspired performance almost allowed the Angolans to equalise, through João Pinto, who scored on the buzzer at the end of the first half, with the ball going in after the end, which 'saved' Portugal from returning to the changing rooms with a 1-1 draw.
When the match resumed, João Rodrigues put the ball in the Angolan goal, with Hélder Nunes getting free to make it 2-0 in the 28th minute, giving Paulo Freitas' team some peace of mind.
Portugal grew in the match from then on, with João Rodrigues extending their lead in the 33rd minute, with Angola, who tested Girão, already committing nine fouls.
At the start of the last seven minutes, a foul on Gonçalo Pinto, Angola's 10th, gave rise to a free kick, but Gonçalo Alves allowed Francisco Veludo to save it.
A foul by João Pinto earned him a blue card and another free kick for Portugal, with Hélder Nunes again blocked by Francisco Veludo in the 48th minute.
João Rodrigues, reaching six goals, made it 4-0 in the following minute, still in the lead, as Ângelo Girão also saved a penalty with a minute and a half left in the game, with another goal on the buzzer not counting.
In the other game, Argentina beat the United States 9-2, leaving Argentina and Portugal, who face each other this Wednesday, with two victories after two games, deciding between them who will be the first team in the group.
The South Americans are leading Group A, with 14 goals scored and only two conceded, while Portugal has scored 16 goals and conceded three, so the Portuguese are obliged to win to come out on top in the group stage.
Angola and the USA have both lost two matches, and are in the last positions of the group, with no points. However, the national team holds on to third place due to having conceded fewer goals and can still dream of qualifying. Angola is looking to improve on its sixth-place finish in 2022 in San Juan, Argentina.
For the national team, the regular phase ends this Wednesday at 12:00 pm with a match against the USA. The world champions (Argentina) and European champions (Portugal) will meet at 5:30 pm for an eagerly awaited clash that will determine the group leader.
It is worth remembering that the world championship ends next Sunday.
