President and Assembly express solidarity and condolences for the victims of the earthquake in Morocco

The President of the Republic, João Lourenço, sent a message to the King of Morocco, Mohammed VI, where he conveyed “condolences and solidarity” for the earthquake on Friday night in this country, which caused more than a thousand deaths. The president of the National Assembly, Carolina Cerqueira, and the parliamentary deputies also showed solidarity with the Moroccan people.

"On behalf of the Angolan executive and myself, in the face of this disastrous event, I present to your majesty and the victimized families, our condolences and solidarity at this painful moment for the Moroccan people. Please accept, your majesty, the expression of my feelings of condolence for this fateful occurrence", reads a note published on the official account on the social network Facebook of the Presidency of Angola.

The National Assembly issued a press release for publicity, in which it also expressed its support for the country in the north of the continent. "The deputies of the National Assembly received with great concern the tragic news of the earthquake that affected Moroccan territory and whose effects have caused thousands of deaths and injuries to date, creating a situation of national mourning in the Kingdom of Morocco", states the document.

He continues: “The National Assembly of Angola and I express our solidarity in the face of this tragedy with the families of the victims of this terrible catastrophe and with the Moroccan people in general, and we express our heartfelt condolences to the grieving families of the fatal victims”.

The document also reiterates “the friendship and solidarity with Moroccan parliamentarians, whose institutional ties were recently reaffirmed during the last visit of Angolan parliamentarians to the Kingdom of Morocco”.

The earthquake that hit Morocco on Friday night caused more than a thousand deaths and 1,200 injuries and caused widespread damage in the Marrakesh region, an important Moroccan tourist destination.

The earthquake, whose epicenter was recorded in the town of Ighil, 63 kilometers southwest of the city of Marrakesh, was felt in Portugal and Spain, reaching a magnitude of 7.0 on the Richter scale, according to the National Institute of Geophysics of Marrakech. Morocco.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) recorded the magnitude of the earthquake at 6.8.
