United Nations “demands an end to the persecution” of the Angolan journalist heard by the PGR

Journalist Coque Mukuta was heard this Wednesday by the Attorney General's Office (PGR) following an action by the United Nations Human Rights Council that "demands an end to the persecution and detentions" of the professional, he said.

At the end of the hearing, Coque Mukuta said that he had also formalized, at the time, a criminal complaint against the provincial commander of the police in Luanda, Eduardo Cerqueira, and his subordinates.

The journalist was heard by the Office of Audit and Investigation Consultancy (GACI), the PGR body, located in Luanda, attached to the National Directorate of Investigation and Criminal Action.

"I made this complaint because the commander covered his officers when I was arrested on August 17, when I was covering the demonstration against alleged irregularities in the electoral process," he said.

According to Coque Mukuta, the Luanda police commander, "even knowing" that the arrest was "illegal", "neither the Cassequel squadron commander nor the chief of operations of the provincial command, all involved in the detention, were held accountable".

Several criminal cases against the Voz da América journalist are being processed at the Attorney General's Office.

The director of the GACI, prosecutor Joaquim Família Martelo, addressed the hearing of the media professional.
