João Lourenço decrees point tolerance for the day of his inauguration

The President of the Republic, re-elected on 24 August, decreed for Thursday a point tolerance throughout the national territory to allow Angolans to “celebrate with dignity” their inauguration.

Workers who work in shifts are excluded from the point tolerance, according to the presidential decree published this Tuesday.

In the diploma, João Lourenço recalls that "the Angolan people exercised with civility and patriotism (...) their constitutionally enshrined right to vote" in the elections of 24 August.

"Having been expressed throughout the country, by the different strata of our society, the will to commemorate this unique act with dignity", that is, the inauguration of the head of state, the President decrees that "point tolerance will be observed throughout the territory national, on the 15th of September 2022".

According to the final tabulation minutes of the August 24 general elections, the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) and its candidate, the outgoing President, João Lourenço, won with 51.17 percent of the votes, followed by the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA), with 43.95 percent.

With these results, the MPLA elected 124 deputies and UNITA 90 deputies, almost double the 2017 elections.

UNITA and the Broad Convergence for the Salvation of Angola – Electoral Coalition (CASA-CE), which did not elect any deputy, contested the results, but the Constitutional Court dismissed the appeals and last week validated the final results of the elections.

João Lourenço, re-elected President of Angola for the next five years, takes office on Thursday, followed by the elected deputies.
