Portuguese-Angolan artist Mónica de Miranda celebrates career with anthological exhibition in Luanda

The Portuguese-Angolan artist Mónica de Miranda celebrates a career spanning nearly two decades with an anthological exhibition highlighting the connection between memory and geography, which will open on Friday at the Portuguese Cultural Center in Luanda.

Mónica de Miranda's Solo Exhibition, "Construir o Tempo", is curated by Suzana Sousa.

"Showing your work in Angola is particularly relevant as it allows us to start at the beginning, so to speak, and from there question personal and artistic processes of interrogation of collective memory and affective geography", says Suzana Sousa, quoted in a statement by the Camões – Portuguese Cultural Center in Luanda.

"The connection between memory and geography plays an important role in Mónica de Miranda's work, drawing our attention to the process of memory construction and the way in which geography is permeated by elements such as architecture or affects", she says.

Artist and researcher, Mónica de Miranda's work is based on themes of urban archeology and personal geographies. The artist works in an interdisciplinary way with drawing, installation, photography, cinema, video and sound, and on the borders between fiction and documentary.

His most outstanding exhibitions include Mirages and Deep Time (Galeria Avenida da India, Lisbon 2022), Berlin Biennale (2022), no longer with the memory but with its future (Oratorio di San Ludovico de Nuova Icona, Venice biennale, Italy 2022 ), the island (Autograph, London, 2022), Europa Oxalá (Fundação Gulbenkian, Lisbon; Mucem, France, 2022), Thinking about possible futures (Biennale del Sur, 2021), African Cosmologies, Houston Fotofest (2020), Tales from the water margins (Biennale Internationale de l'Art Contemporain de Casablanca, 2018), Taxidermy of the future (Biennale Lubumbashi, 2019), Panorama (Tyburn Gallery, London, UK, 2017); Arte Contemporânea Africana e Estética das Traduções (Dakar Biennale, Senegal, 2016); Addis Photo Fest (Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 2016); etc.

The exhibition will be on view from September 9 to October 19, 2022, at Camões – Centro Cultural Português in Luanda.

At the same time, and in parallel, another artistic work is being developed in the city of Luanda, the exhibition "Caminho para as Estrelas" curated by Paula Nascimento, at Galeria Jahmek.
