Lobito Corridor grows again: express train prepares route to Luau

The so-called ‘Lobito Corridor’ may now extend to the border town of Luau, as a way of decongesting the flow of passengers at the train stations.

:

This extension is being studied by the Provincial Government of Moxico, in partnership with the Benguela Railroad Administration Council (CFB). The extension of the express train branch will aim to increase the transport capacity of people and goods, ensuring greater quality and comfort on trips to Luau, municipality that houses the last station of the Benguela Railway.

It should be remembered that on the 27th of July, the Lobito-Luena link was implemented via express train, with two frequencies a week. This train has eight cabin-type carriages, with a capacity to hold 144 passengers, according to Angop.

After a meeting between Gonçalves Muandumba, governor of Moxico, and António Cabral, chairman of the CFB's Board of Directors, which took place this Tuesday, the PCA told the press that the measure will relieve the stations, allowing for greater and better mobility for the population .

"The province of Moxico is the one that registers the highest number of passengers, taking into account the poor state of the communication routes and because it receives passengers from Lunda Sul, Lunda Norte and the neighboring DRC, which is why there is a need to increase the frequencies of the freight train," said the official.

According to the provincial government of Moxico, another novelty discussed at the meeting is the introduction of the 'Recurreiro' train - a train with more wagons to streamline the transport of goods, especially agricultural products and their traders, substantially reducing floods.

Gonçalves Muandumba also highlighted the need to build a customs port in Luau, as well as bridges along National Road 250, which connects Luau-Alto Zambeze, over a distance of 519 kilometers.
