Covid-19: Africa with 368 more deaths and 18,745 infected in the last 24 hours

Africa has recorded 368 deaths associated with covid-19 in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of deaths since the start of the pandemic to 199,500 and 18,745 newly infected, according to the latest official data.

According to the African Union Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), the total number of cases on the continent is 7,910,086 and the number recovered is 7,143,322, plus 67,585 in the last 24 hours.

Southern Africa remains the most affected region on the continent, with 3,753,507 cases and 104,111 deaths associated with covid-19. This region is home to the country most affected by the pandemic, South Africa, which accounts for 2,819,945 cases and 83,419 deaths.

North Africa, which succeeds southern Africa in covid-19 numbers, reached 2,397,486 infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus and 64,222 deaths associated with the disease.

East Africa has 923,802 infections and 19,041 deaths, and the West Africa region has 613,602 infections and 8911 deaths. Central Africa has the fewest cases of infection and deaths, 221,689 and 3215 respectively.

Tunisia, the second African country with more fatalities after South Africa, registers 23,817 deaths and 674,047 infected, followed by Egypt, with 16,789 deaths and 290,027 cases, and Morocco, which accounts for the second highest number of infections in the entire continent, 884,085 cases, but fewer deaths than the two previous countries, 13,073 deaths associated with the disease.

Among the countries most affected are also Algeria, with 5420 deaths and 198,004 people infected, Kenya, with 4786 deaths associated with the disease and 240,172 infections, and Ethiopia, with 4763 fatalities and 314,984 infections.

In relation to Portuguese-speaking countries, Mozambique accounts for 1,878 deaths associated with the disease and 147,923 infected accumulated since the beginning of the pandemic, followed by Angola (1270 deaths and 48,656 cases), Cape Verde (315 deaths and 35,928 infections), Equatorial Guinea (128 deaths and 9,760 cases), Guinea-Bissau (121 deaths and 5902 infected) and São Tomé and Príncipe (37 deaths and 2683 infections).
