Oil companies operating in Angola admit retraction of investments due to covid-19

Oil multinationals operating in Angola admitted this Wednesday that the covid-19 pandemic has negatively affected a sector facing challenges such as the retraction of new investments in the country.

The situation was reported to the press by the spokesperson for the Association of Oil Exploration and Production Companies in Angola, at the end of the hearing that President João Lourenço granted to 15 oil companies operating in Angola.

Andre Kostelnik, who is also director of ExxonMobil in Angola, said that due to the pandemic of the new coronavirus, there was a delay in business decisions, as well as a reduction in drilling activity, which delayed investment opportunities.

"These opportunities can only be recovered as economic activity begins to recover at the world level," said Andre Kostelnik, noting that it is still impossible to translate the overall impact of the covid-19 pandemic on industrial activity into figures.

According to ExxonMobil's general manager, Angola's future is no different from the current challenging situation, which is the economic impact of the covid-19 pandemic on the oil industry.

The spokesman of the meeting stressed that there is a commitment among the operators to continue working together, as in the past, to find solutions through which they can bring more investment to Angola in the oil sector.

Besides the state oil company Sonangol, there are also American, British, BP, Italian, Eni and French multinationals, Total, present in Angola.
