Afrobasket 2025: First round ends with Tunisia and South Sudan's surprising defeats

This Wednesday, eight African teams took to the field to play the first round of Afrobasket 2025, taking place in Angola. Cape Verde, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, and Nigeria won their matches on the second day of the continental competition, which concluded the first round of the group stage with two surprises: defeats by Tunisia (the defending champion) and South Sudan, which was the favorite.

Ivory Coast played Rwanda this Wednesday, winning by eight points (78-70).

At halftime of the Group A match, Ivory Coast was trailing 36-37, but recovered in the final two periods, eventually winning.

This Wednesday, Tunisia and Cameroon also met. The result of this Group B match was surprising, as Tunisia lost.

Cameroon was already leading 51-42 at halftime, with Cameroon winning 86-65.

The second day of Afrobasket 2025 also featured a match between Cape Verde and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

At halftime, the DRC was leading 34-25, but Cape Verde came back.

The Group A match ended up being won by Cape Verde, which scored 75 points to DRC's 66.

In the day's other match, Nigeria emerged victorious, defeating Madagascar 77-59.

Wednesday marked the conclusion of the first round of the continental championship, whose biggest surprises were the defeats of Tunisia and South Sudan.

This first round saw the victories of Angola, Egypt, Guinea, Senegal, Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Cameroon, and Cape Verde.

The competition continues this Thursday with four more matches, including Angola's match against Guinea.
