The announcement is included in the final communiqué of the 2nd ordinary meeting of the Council of the Republic, an advisory body to President João Lourenço, which took place this Wednesday and was dedicated to the topic of food security, and also addressed the programme of activities to mark the 50th Anniversary of National Independence.
The celebrations will begin this year on 11 November 2024 and will run until 31 December 2025, throughout the country and at Angolan diplomatic and consular missions.
The central event, which constitutes the focal point of the programmed activities, will take place in Luanda at Praça da República, next to the Memorial to Dr. António Agostinho Neto, the first President of Angola, and will be presided over by the current head of state, João Lourenço.
Regarding the 50th anniversary, the President highlighted that it put an end to colonial repression and the plundering of resources, racism and “all types of discrimination” to which Angolans were subjected for five centuries, so there are “enough reasons to celebrate in style”.
The memorandum on the organisation of the events commemorating National Independence, prepared by the Interministerial Commission created for this purpose, defines the General Objective of the “Angola 50 Years of Independence” Project as preparing a worthy celebration of the Independence of the Angolan people and highlighting the main achievements made over the last 50 years, as well as looking ahead to the future of Angola.
The chosen motto was: “Angola 50 years: preserving and valuing the achievements achieved, building a better future”.
