New Mbanza Kongo airport will be opened during celebrations of 50 years of independence

The New Mbanza Kongo Airport, in the province of Zaire, should be inaugurated on the occasion of the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of National Independence, in 2025. The date was advanced in a meeting between the Chief Executive, João Lourenço, and the government of the province of Zaire.

Those responsible met Wednesday, during a working visit lasting a few hours by the President of the Republic, and the head of State recommended the acceleration of the requalification works of the Mbanza Kongo – Kiende – Novo Aeroporto Section, to ensure the user access to the infrastructure.

The new airport will have the capacity to receive around 250 thousand passengers, justifying the investment with the need to guarantee access to the city of Mbanza Kongo as a world heritage site, as per UNESCO guidelines.

The airport infrastructure will have domestic and international connections, and construction is being carried out on 12,100 square meters, with the control tower being 35.64 meters high. Valued at around 89.9 billion kwanzas, the new airport is called 'Nimi a Lukeni', and among its various features, the capacity to receive flights from Boeing 777-300ER aircraft stands out.

At the same meeting, it was decided to build a football stadium with a capacity of up to 10 thousand seats in the municipality of Mbanza Kongo and a multipurpose pavilion for Soyo. The funds necessary to carry out these projects should already be foreseen in the next General State Budget (OGE 2025).

The meeting also recommended the mobilization of financial resources, as a priority, to carry out the water project in Soyo, Tomboco and the Commune of Musserra, in the municipality of Nzeto. The construction of a road between Mbanza Kongo and Soyo, a distance of 180 kilometers, was also recommended, to connect the headquarters of these two municipalities in the province.

The Executive also decided to guarantee the construction of road, water and energy infrastructure for Mbanza Kongo's structural projects, such as the centrality, the new airport and the new hospital.

Another recommendation from the meeting was the requalification of the old facilities of the Provincial Justice Services, which currently operate on the premises of IU Hotels. The measure aims to ensure that hotel facilities can serve the original purpose of strengthening the hotel network, as part of promoting tourism in the province.

President of the Republic visits works on the new Zaire General Hospital

Scheduled to open in August 2025, the most important hospital unit in Zaire received a visit this Wednesday from João Lourenço, who confirmed the progress of the works.

Accompanied by members of the delegation that went to Zaire for this working visit, the head of state toured the infrastructure, receiving specific explanations from the contractor - the company Vamed - about the progress of the work, its pace and prospects for completion.
Located on the outskirts of the city of M’banza Kongo, the level three hospital unit will have a capacity of 290 beds. The infrastructure has four operating rooms, six inpatient wards, physiotherapy, hemodialysis, imaging, neonatal care, pediatrics, maternity and therapeutic diagnosis services.

The hospital unit, under construction with a gross area of ​​27 thousand square meters, has an estimated cost of R$87,850 million.

It is worth remembering that the construction of the Mbanza Kongo General Hospital began in 2014, having been marked by various stoppages and constraints. The works resumed in June 2022, having only progressed there. Opening and entry into operation are scheduled for next year.
