MPLA accuses UNITA of “political maneuvers” to destabilize the country

The MPLA accuses UNITA of “political maneuvers to destabilize the country and sow discord” and of having been unable to accept the results of the 2022 elections that gave victory to the MPLA.

In a statement released on its Facebook page, the MPLA accuses the largest opposition party of "false and irresponsible accusations" and of "political maneuvers to "destabilize the country and sow discord among Angolans".

According to the MPLA, UNITA was unable to accept the 2022 results, as in 1992, and "instead of working for Angola, it prefers to foment division and disorder".

"UNITA is in the memory of Angolans as the party that has not yet managed to purge itself of the practices that led to the destruction and suffering of so many Angolans during the civil war", criticizes the ruling party.

In a press conference on Wednesday, the leader of the UNITA bench, Liberty Chiyaka, considered the performance of the National Assembly during the second parliamentary year of the 5th Legislature, which ended on August 15, "markedly negative", because the Angolan legislative body did not assert itself as a sovereign power with its own identity, separate and independent of the executive branch, capable of interpreting and affirming the sovereign will of the people in each legislative act.

According to Chiyaka, parliament continues to be subordinate to the will of President João Loureço, in an allusion to the plenary session of October 2023, which did not create an ad hoc committee to analyze the process of indictment and impeachment of the President, in "violation of the Constitution".

"This time, in terms of legislative initiative, the National Assembly has not yet established itself as the legislative power par excellence of the Republic of Angola, since its legislative production on its own initiative has been zero", stressed the UNITA leader.

In its response, the MPLA states that UNITA "uses the people's difficulties to promote itself" and resorts to "lies to impose its political agenda", considering that "the failed attempt to impeach the President of the Republic" was an "anti-democratic manoeuvre and a direct affront to the sovereign will of the people".

"This act, which has no precedent in any serious democracy, exposes the largest opposition party as a destabilising force, which does not hesitate to put its interests above the peace and stability of the country", accuses the MPLA.

It also highlights that UNITA is also responsible for "what was achieved and, above all, for what was not achieved in this second parliamentary year", accusing the opposing party's deputies of not seeking political consensus.

"The MPLA promoted and approved fundamental laws for the development of Angola, while UNITA once again chose to side with inertia and obstructionism", the party stressed.

On Wednesday, UNITA stated that only its parliamentary group had presented and approved a bill and that all other initiatives had been taken by the holder of executive power, considering that during this period there was more diplomacy and institutional political marketing than legislative production.

A view that the MPLA disputes, saying that the initiatives presented by the President of the Republic, who is also the President of the MPLA, directly reflect the MPLA's government programme and the commitments made to the people.

In the same statement, the MPLA stated that the administrative restructuring of Luanda, which UNITA disputes, "is a necessary measure and considers that land use planning "is a dynamic process" that "in no way harms the implementation of local authorities".

The MPLA concluded by stressing that it is "open to dialogue" with all political forces and reiterated that "stability is not built with coups".
