UAN: more than 17,000 candidates compete for around 5,500 available positions

It is since this Monday – the start day of the entrance exams – that a total of 17,432 candidates have been disputing for one of the 5570 vacancies that the Agostinho Neto University (UAN) has, for the degree courses taught by the 10 Organic Units.

With regard to enrollments by Organic Units, the Faculty of Medicine leads the list. According to Fernanda dos Santos Benedito, coordinator of the entrance exam, the aforementioned faculty had 5441 candidates, while on the other side of the coin there is the School of Hospitality and Tourism (132 enrollments), followed by Anthropology (14 candidates).

Regarding vacancies, according to the person in charge, of the total number available, three percent are intended for descendants of ex-combatants and people with special educational needs, while five percent are directed to candidates with protection from international agreements, as well as as the children of members of the diplomatic corps accredited in the country, writes Angop.

The official, cited by Angop, also justified that the low number of vacancies has to do with reasons related to the infrastructural nature, availability of human resources, as well as the low level of performance of students enrolled in the previous year. And she added: "The construction on campus is expected by the end of this year 2023, of ten Organic Units of the UAN, only when we have infrastructure, more professors and researchers will we be able to offer a greater number of vacancies".

In addition, she also made it known that throughout the enrollment process, the higher education establishment had allocated around 110,200,000 kwanzas, to be spent on expenses related to the process, noting that the access tests are self-financed, writes Angop.

Opening of public competition for teachers

On the occasion, the opening of a public tender for teachers was also announced. According to the official, quoted by Jornal de Angola, the tender should be carried out before the end of the year by the UAN.

Without advancing the number of vacancies available to professors for the competition and the places to be occupied by new professors, Fernanda dos Santos Benedito informed that the university has 960 professors, with the need to admit at least another 500 professors.

"The shortage of teachers is one of the factors conditioning the increase in the number of vacancies. We are hopeful because this year we will have a public tender to help mitigate this concern", she said, quoted by Jornal de Angola.

It should be noted that the entrance exams started on Monday and will run until next Friday, August 25th. The exams take place in person, at the University Campus, in Camama, Urban District of Cidade Universitária, in Luanda.
