According to a government statement, to which VerAngola had access, in the first half of 2023 the number of accidents dropped from 7283 to 7232, while deaths went from 1458 to 1256.

"The number of road accidents recorded a slight reduction in the last six months, going from 7283 to 7232 (51 less accidents) and from 1458 to 1256 (202 less deaths)", reads the note.

On the other hand, in terms of injured, the number had an increase of 93 cases, rising to 8926.

The data contained in the report – which was analyzed this Wednesday by the National Council for Road and Traffic Planning (CNVOT) – also indicate that "material damage was estimated at more than one billion kwanzas".

Among the "most frequent" accidents in the country, run over and collisions between cars and motorcycles stand out, says the note.

"The main victims of the accidents were pedestrians and passengers, aged between 16 and 44 years old, mostly male, with 56 percent of deaths and 53 percent of injuries", reads the statement.

In terms of provinces, the list of those most affected by road accidents is led by Luanda (1712 accidents and 444 deaths). Here, the provinces of Benguela (549 accidents and 127 deaths), Huíla (614 accidents and 91 deaths) and Huambo (528 accidents and 91 deaths) also stand out.

At the meeting, which had the guidance of the Vice-President of the Republic, Esperança Costa, "the CNVOT members appreciated the National Road Safety and Prevention Plan approved by Presidential Decree n.º 145/23 of 30 June", says the communicated.

That diploma foresees "a total of 56 key actions for prevention and road safety to be implemented" in the second half of this year.

According to the statement, with the "implementation of these key actions, it is intended to improve the process of training drivers, expand rescue and support services for victims, develop a culture of road safety education, ensure efficient management of road safety and harmonize the national transport and transit system, within the scope of the Tripartite Program between the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), the East African Community (EAC) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC), as well as adapting the model driving license to SADC standards".

On the occasion, those responsible also assessed the Draft Proposal for Partial Amendment to Presidential Decree n.º 202/16, of 27 September, which approves the regulation on the "assignment of license plates, number and registration plates of vehicles and national registration plates".

"The members of the Council were informed about the Public Consultation Plan of the Proposal for Revision of the Highway Code, due to the fact that the current one is found to be inadequate", the communiqué also mentions.
