In his opening speech for the organization's 14th summit, in São Tomé and Príncipe, João Lourenço warned of the current "troubled world", with "political, military and social upheavals taking place in various parts of our planet".
"Our main concern in terms of security and stability" is the "Republic of Mozambique, where in some way each of the Member States dedicated their attention and the possible contribution to helping the brotherly people of Mozambique to face the problems that come facing in the Cabo Delgado region", said the head of state, who concluded two years of the rotating presidency of the CPLP, which will now be assumed by São Tomé and Príncipe.
João Lourenço highlighted that the "strength of solidarity and its effects was demonstrated in Mozambique", allowing "to mitigate its difficulties and to a large extent to contain the terrorist organizations that dangerously threatened the stability, security and order in that sister country".
The President also criticized Russia's invasion of Ukraine, sitting at the same table as Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who last week participated in the BRICS summit in South Africa, of which Moscow is a part.
"In these times, the conflict between Russia and Ukraine is always at the center of our attention, in relation to which we have been taking very clear positions of condemnation of aggression and occupation of territories of a sovereign State, of the need to put an end to to the war and if the existing disputes are resolved through negotiation to put an end to the war and achieve a lasting peace", said João Lourenço.
