CNE without complaints about election results and dismisses complaints about records

The National Electoral Commission (CNE) announced this Tuesday that it has not received any complaints from political parties about the final results of the 24 August elections and has outright dismissed complaints about the records presented by UNITA and CASA-CE.

The information was transmitted by the CNE spokesman, Lucas Quilundo, at the end of the plenary session that followed the publication of the final results of the national poll, noting that the plenary considered three complaints and none were related to the election results.

According to Lucas Quilundo, the Broad Convergence for the Salvation of Angola–Electoral Coalition (CASA-CE) intended, in its complaint, for the CNE to post the summary records at polling stations.

"And it is clear that since the applicant did not indicate, as determined by the organic law of the general elections, which imposes the need for justification and evidence of the facts he alleges, the plenary of the CNE dismissed this complaint", he told journalists.

Two complaints from the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) were also considered and rejected by the plenary of the electoral body.

"A second complaint by UNITA, signed by its representative, was intended to be able to include or have a complaint recorded in the records of the count of the general elections", explained Lucas Quilundo,

The refusal, argued the national commissioner of the CNE, "was due to the fact that it was placed out of time, that is, the intention of the representative of UNITA to include in the records his complaint that was unknown at the time".

"It cannot be answered insofar as the national tabulation records were already approved without any challenge, so the matter could not be included", he stressed.

The CNE plenary also rejected a complaint by UNITA, signed by its representative to the Provincial Electoral Commission of Moxico, east of the country, which wanted to see corrected results obtained by his party in that constituency.

"And it was not answered due to the lack of legitimacy of this representative, insofar as he is from Moxico, he has no legitimacy to argue with the plenary of the CNE and for these facts, they were outright rejected", maintained Lucas Quilundo.

The president of the CNE, Manuel Pereira da Silva, released on Monday the final tabulation records of the August 24 general elections, which proclaimed the MPLA and its candidate, João Lourenço, as winners with 51.17 percent of the votes, followed by UNITA with 43.95 percent.

With these results, the MPLA elected 124 deputies and UNITA elected 90 deputies, almost double the 2017 elections.

The Social Renewal Party (PRS) won two seats in parliament with 1.14 percent of voters' votes, the same number of deputies won the National Liberation Front of Angola (FNLA) and the Humanist Party of Angola (PHA) with 1.06 percent and 1.02 percent of votes, respectively.

The CASA-CE coalition, the APN and the P-Njango did not obtain seats in the National Assembly, which in the 2022-2017 legislature will have 220 deputies.
