Bloco Democrático challenges MPLA to public debate with United Patriotic Front

The president of the Democratic Bloc (BD), Angolan opposition, on Tuesday challenged the ruling MPLA to a public debate with members of the United Patriotic Front on lines of governance and its implementation, dismissing the "reactive communiqué" of the "comrades".

:

"Still on the communiqué, I take the opportunity to challenge the MPLA to have a debate on programmatic lines before a public media organ, we already have a clear outline today," Filomeno Vieira Lopes told reporters Tuesday.

For the BD leader, who integrates the United Patriotic Front together with UNITA leader, Adalberto Costa Júnior, and the coordinator of the political project PRA JA Servir Angola, MPLA should publicly prove its ideas and not speak from his house.

The "MPLA (Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola, in power since 1975) that does not speak from his house, with great support from the media, but that actually proves his ideas.

"And how can we prove it let's have a debate. I challenge the MPLA with the forces that are making up the Patriotic Front to actually see who does or does not have a governance program, but not only to discuss the program, but also how to implement it," said the BD politician.

The MPLA considered last Saturday that the new political project United Patriotic Front does not present alternative proposals for Angola nor does it have a vision for the future.

"As expected, the so-called 'Front' does not present any alternative governance program proposal to that of MPLA, evaluates the present in an incoherent and irresponsible way and does not have any vision of the future for the country," reads the statement released by MPLA's Political Bureau.

The new political project United Patriotic Front last week defended the need to adopt a national emergency program "to get the country out of the crisis in which it finds itself," referring to hunger, health and unemployment, among others.

The position appears in a political declaration signed by the leaders of the United Patriotic Front, the presidents of the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA), the Democratic Bloc and the political project PRA-JA Serving Angola, Abel Chivukuvuku.

The secretariat of the MPLA's Political Bureau criticized the United Patriotic Front's mention of "the MPLA's loss of legitimacy to continue governing the country."

"Such a statement is indicative of the known lack of sense of state and respect for democratic institutions that has been demonstrated by some opposition forces, with UNITA at the head," considered the body of the MPLA, the party of President João Lourenço.

This Tuesday, Filomeno Vieira Lopes depreciated the MPLA's communiqué, stating that only in the view of the ruling party can a communiqué have a program: "A communiqué is a position on a concrete subject to several subjects or it can express a vision".

"But, a communiqué cannot express a program," Filomeno Vieira Lopes said at the end of the ceremony of presentation of the Report of the Consultation of Communities on the Cafunfo Incidents.

According to the president of the BD, the Patriotic United Front is being constituted, is discussing a whole set of fundamental elements for its work, namely mission, values and principles.

"We will then discuss the format and, based on that, we will present a program, as you know one of the agreements we will have is to present a common program to the country, that is, to give confidence to stability that a set of forces will present a common program," he explained.

Because, justified the politician, "we understand that we are facing a global program that requires a global program, more than this we are going to scrutinize our program within the civil society in order to find the largest consensus possible".

The resolution of the "complexity" of the problems of the country "demands the congregation of forces, because a party alone does not obtain and has not been obtaining", he noted.

"This MPLA communiqué did not shake the United Patriotic Front; on the contrary, it showed society that the party in power is a reactive party, a party that functions in function of what the opposition is doing," he stressed.

Filomeno Vieira Lopes also considered that MPLA's communiqué shows "some irritation" within the "comrades" with the possibility of the emergence of a wide front, "because this party has always fought against political groupings of this country", he concluded.
