The National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) pays tribute to the former leader with a month that is entirely dedicated to him, as well as a week of intense activities to mark August 3, the date on which Savimbi would celebrate his 87th birthday.
The party-political activities, which began on Sunday, extend until August 10, being adapted to each location and the restrictions imposed by covid-19.
The central act will be presided by the president of the party of the "Galo Negro", Adalberto da Costa Júnior, indicated UNITA in a note to the media.
The party stresses that Savimbi "continues to be the guiding compass for UNITA," describing the former leader as "an unusual patriot who gave everything for Angola," contributing to the fight against the portuguese colonial regime, national independence, democratization of the Republic of Angola and peace, for which "he fought with all his strength, even giving his life".
UNITA stresses, in the note, that Savimbi's thought "bases and inspires the solutions of the country's burning problems", reiterating the commitment "for the due preparation of the party to face and achieve positive results in the general elections, in 2022".
To this end, he continues, UNITA has done what is necessary to have a transparent and credible electoral process and has worked with political partners to mobilize the living forces of the nation and the various interest groups in the perspective of change.
"The expression of this will is in the efforts of the construction of the broad patriotic and democratic front for the alternation of power," he adds.
The historical leader of UNITA was killed in combat by the government armed forces, on February 22, 2002, in Moxico province.
