The president of the Association of Angolan Teachers (APA) said that there are no conditions for the resumption of classes in Luanda, especially in the first cycle of primary education, due to covid-19, considering that "maybe" is possible in the second cycle.

Inácio Gonga, who was speaking during the "Reflection Meeting on the Right to Education and Training in Context of covid-19", assured that Angolan teachers are prepared for the challenges imposed by covid-19.

But, he noted, "they just call for attention to be given to the pressing situations that have to do with the pandemic."

For the APA leader, the resumption of classes in Angola, suspended in March due to the new coronavirus, which causes covid-19, "must be very thoughtful", particularly in the component of human and material resources available to school institutions in the country .

According to the official, in Luanda, the focus of the pandemic in the country, there are no conditions for biosafety in schools to restart classes in the first cycle of primary education, with many schools still without water and personal protection material.

"Looking at Luanda, we can affirm, without fear of making mistakes, that any restart that may be taken, perhaps for the second cycle, but for the first cycle of primary education, we are still a long way away", he stressed.

In Luanda, he added, there is a shortage of water, bio-security material and human resources in primary schools.

Classes in general and university education in Angola were suspended in March, before President João Lourenço decreed a state of emergency, which ran from 27 March to 25 May, in order to contain the spread of covid-19.

According to the APA president, the decisions to restart classes must be made "according to the Angolan reality", so, he noted, the excess of students, the bathrooms, the support staff and all this should be considered by those who decide ".

Debating the implications of covid-19 for the education and training of children and young people in Angola was the purpose of the meeting, promoted by the Ministry of Education, which brought together public and private actors from the teaching and learning system.
