Joana Lina considers it urgent and imperative to prepare schools for return to school

Urgent and absolutely imperative. That is how the provincial governor of Luanda described the need to reconfigure schools in the capital, so that they adapt to the new post-pandemic context of covid-19.

Joana Lina considered it equally important to use all technical and technological means capable of assisting the education sector's strategy.

Speaking at a meeting to reflect on the right to education and training in the context of the covid-19, the governor reiterated that it is essential to mitigate the difficulties in the supply of water and electricity, as well as to guarantee hygiene and biosafety material in schools.

The capital has about 4000 schools closed, between primary and secondary, public and private, with two million students enrolled and 32,000 employees hired, between teaching and non-teaching staff.

The governor also said, cited by Angop, that 21,384 people were trained during the school closing period, including teachers, administrative staff, parents and guardians and qualified workers.

The program included the elaboration of a protocol for the entry and exit of students and other measures considered essential in terms of biosafety. “In the field of school preparation, the objective was to develop a general preparation plan that could ensure that they are ready to receive students,” said Joana Lina.

Filipe Zau, president of the Association of Private Higher Education Institutions of Angola (AIESPA), argued that the solution should be the same for all types of education (public and private).

"What it seems is that there are more problems with private educational institutions and it is in this segment that the government should pay particular attention, because those in the public sector depend on the OGE", he added, quoted by Angop.

The official, who warned against the suspension of contracts for teachers and employees, also defended the restart of distance or semi-presidential classes.

At the end of the meeting, Joana Lina did not point out a time horizon for students and teachers to return to school, but stated that it is necessary to “find ways and decisions to return to school”.

The academic year in the country normally starts in February and ends in the first half of December.
