“500 million” case: José Filomeno dos Santos sentenced to five years in prison

The son of ex-President José Eduardo dos Santos, José Filomeno 'Zenu' dos Santos, was this Friday sentenced to five years in prison, in what became known as "500 million".

According to the ruling, read by the judge who presided over the trial, João Pitra, 'Zenu' dos Santos was sentenced for the crime of fraud for continuing fraud, to four years in prison and for the crime of trafficking in influences on a continued basis. two years in prison, in a legal cumulative five years.

Valter Filipe, ex-governor of the National Bank of Angola, was convicted of the crime of embezzlement in a continued form in six years in prison and for the crime of fraud for continuing in the form of four years in prison, totaling a single sentence of eight years in prison.

António Samalia Bule, former director of BNA management, was sentenced for a crime of embezzlement to four years in prison and a crime of fraud for fraud in the form continued to three years, in a single sentence of five years in prison.

Jorge Gaudens Sebastião, businessman and longtime friend of José Filomeno dos Santos, was convicted of the crime of fraud for continuing fraud in five years in prison and the crime of trafficking influences to two years in prison, in a single sentence. six years in prison.

The defendants were acquitted of the crime of money laundering and will remain at liberty in the face of the appeal filed by the defense that will appeal to the plenary of the Supreme Court.

They are also condemned to pay the court fee, which is set at 300,000 kwanzas each, and to pay damages to the State, while Zenu dos Santos will have to pay fees of 150,000 kwanzas to his unofficial defender.

The defendants were ordered to pay jointly to the state 5 million kwanzas for moral damages, 8 million and 512 thousand dollars for the damages that resulted from their actions, expenses with the judicial process that went through London in the amount of 2 million pounds for attorney fees, $ 9000 for plane tickets and more than 5 million kwanzas for allowances.

The lawsuit was related to an irregular transfer of 500 million dollars from the central bank to the account of a foreign private company based in London, with the aim of constituting a strategic investment fund to finance structural projects in Angola.
