A statement from the Press Office of the President of the Republic, distributed this Monday, states that the Head of State, João Lourenço, expressed deep consternation over the death, on Sunday, at the age of 82, of Muhammadu Buhari, who served as President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria from 2015 to 2023.

João Lourenço, President of Angola and acting Chairman of the AU, in a message sent to his Nigerian counterpart, Bola Tinubu, said that Muhammadu Buhari was a leader "whose memory will endure for future generations."

"During the period in which he led the destinies of your nation, he distinguished himself by the political strength and determination with which he sought to modernize Nigeria, introducing important reforms that helped promote economic diversification, transparency, and integrity, demonstrating a strategic vision focused on development and improving the living conditions of the Nigerian people," João Lourenço stated.

According to the AU leader, the former Nigerian President's experience and acumen were crucial in driving forward initiatives and ideas within the African Union that helped to energize the institution and strengthen its role as a catalyst for African integration and the continent's development.

The President also highlighted the legacy left by "this important figure of the Nigerian nation."

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa also offered his condolences to the government and people of Nigeria on the death of Muhammadu Buhari, whom he described as a "patriot."

Kenyan President William Ruto also expressed his "deep and heartfelt" condolences, considering the death of the former Nigerian head of state a loss for the entire continent.

The Nigerian government declared Tuesday a public holiday as part of the 10-day national mourning period decreed in Buhari's honor, allowing all Nigerians to "reflect on the life, leadership, and values of the former head of state."

Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo said in a statement that the day represents "a gesture of respect" for Buhari's services, his contribution to the country's democratic process, and his "lasting legacy" in governance and development.

Buhari will be buried this Tuesday in his hometown of Daura, in the northern state of Katsina, according to Islamic rites.

Nigerian Vice President Kashim Shettima traveled to the United Kingdom to accompany Buhari's body back to the country. Buhari had been hospitalized in a London clinic.
