Seeds and fertilizers will no longer be free

Agriculture and Forestry Minister Isaac dos Anjos announced that the government will end free seed and fertilizer distribution. In other words, with this measure, which will take effect starting with the 2025-2026 harvest, the government will no longer provide free fertilizers and seeds.

According to the minister, the state must stop competing with companies capable of meeting the market demands, whose actions will provide "balance" in fertilizer and seed prices.

In statements following a meeting with the governor of Huíla, as part of his four-day visit to the province, cited by Angop, Isaac dos Anjos reported that the Executive has given permission to the responsible ministry to enter into a contract to purchase 180,000 tons of fertilizer from Morocco, while the private sector will bring in up to 200,000 tons. Therefore, it is illogical to continue intervening in this trade by making donations when there is a business sector that needs to consolidate itself.

Regarding fertilizers, the Minister of Agriculture and Forestry said there is an expectation of growth and a greater demand for fertilizer, which is why he considers it appropriate that farmers have purchased it.

Regarding seeds, Isaac dos Anjos reported that there are four companies and more than six resellers, a sector in which the Executive no longer wishes to intervene, aiming to keep the market operational through regulation.

Therefore, he reinforced that there will no longer be any offers and that people will have to pay: "I hope to count on your support in conveying to people that it is not my will to do so, but it is an obligation. We will no longer offer offers; what is available, people will have to pay. We will discuss payment methods later."

On the occasion, he also took the opportunity to mention that, during his field trip, he had noticed that the grain silos or storage facilities were full of masango, massambala, and corn, a fact that is satisfactory, writes Angop.
