With the victory against a direct opponent, after losing 34-31 to the Netherlands in the opening round of Group B, Angola remains in the running for the quarter-finals, within reach of the top four teams in each of the groups.
The match began with successive ties and alternating leads on the scoreboard until 6-5, when the Spanish team, with a partial of 3-0, took the lead with a two-goal advantage (8-6).
The national team cancelled out the deficit and tied at 10-10 after 20 minutes, but Spain regained the two-goal advantage at 13-11, which allowed them to reach half-time with a one-goal lead (15-14).
In the second half, the story of the game was completely different, as the Spanish team scored only six goals, and the round began with Angola scoring three in a row, which allowed them to take a two-goal lead, at 17-15.
Spain reacted, tied the score at 17-17 and led until 19-18, with about 10 minutes to play, when the Angolan team scored a 7-0 run, which raised the score to 25-19, settling the match, which ended at 26-21.
The team's victory was sustained by its finishing ability, as it scored 26 goals in 36 shots compared to Spain's 21 in 46 shots, and by its goalkeeper Marta Alberto, with a defensive efficiency of 37 percent.
Vilma Nenganga, with seven goals, and Juliana Machado, with six from six shots, were the team's top scorers, while Carmen Campos, also with six, stood out for Spain.
With one game still to play in the second round of Group B, between Olympic champions France and the Netherlands, both with two points, Brazil, Angola and Hungary remain tied, also with two points, but from two games, while Spain is last, still without a single point.
The Olympic handball tournament is contested by 12 teams, divided into two groups of six, with the top four qualifying for the quarter-finals (to be played on 6 August). The semi-finals are scheduled for the 8th and the final for two days later (10 August).
