After achieving the second consecutive presence in the World Championship, Cape Verde once again made history with the first qualification for the handball CAN final, in which it was surpassed by the hosts and now two-time African champions of the sport.
Even with the defeat, Cape Verde took home the silver medal, in what was the first time that a collective sport in the country reached the final of an international competition.
The Cape Verdeans reached this stage of the competition after beating Morocco (23–19) in the semi-finals and Angola (24–23) in the quarter-finals.
In the group stage, they won second place in group C, behind Tunisia, having beaten Nigeria (35-29) and lost to the Tunisians (30-24).
