“Consternado”, MPLA suspends all political activities until the end of national mourning

The Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA), party of former President José Eduardo dos Santos, who died in Barcelona, expressed “dismay” at his death and announced today that it had suspended all political activity until the end of national mourning.

"At this moment we have already suspended all political activity of the party. We will not carry out any other act until the end of the national mourning", said MPLA spokesman Rui Falcão, in statements to Lusa.

Rui Falcão added that the party, "in addition to following the State programme" will have its own program to honor the former president, about which he said he could not provide details for now.

"What I can tell you is that it is a moment of deep dismay," he concluded.

Former Angolan President José Eduardo dos Santos died this Friday at the age of 79, announced the Presidency of the Republic.

"The Executive of the Republic of Angola informs national and international public opinion, with a feeling of great pain and consternation, of the death of His Excellency the former President of the Republic, Engineer José Eduardo dos Santos, which took place today at 11:10 am, ( ...) after prolonged illness", reads the statement.

The executive, who presents "deep feelings of sorrow" to the family, also appeals "to everyone's serenity in this moment of pain and consternation".

"The Executive of the Republic of Angola bows, with the greatest respect and consideration, to the figure of a statesman of great historical dimension, who governed for many years with clairvoyance and humanism the destinies of the Angolan Nation, in very difficult moments", adds the statement.
