ALER: Angola is entering the renewable energy map

The executive director of the Lusophone Association of Renewable Energies (ALER) said this Tuesday that Angola is entering the renewable energy map and that the next step will be greater involvement of the private sector in this market.

Isabel Cancela de Abreu, who was speaking on the sidelines of an international conference on renewable energies, in Luanda, praised the path that Angola has taken in this field and highlighted the interest of ALER members – Portuguese-speaking companies – in promoting the topic and participating in forums to talk about the opportunities that exist.

"For a few years now, the Government has given greater attention to these issues, we believe that the data are released and that the sector will advance at great speed", declared the ALER leader.

In the case of Angola, she highlighted that, in addition to the projects already made public, "there are many investment intentions" that reveal the existence of many companies interested in developing renewable energy projects in Angola.

ALER, together with the Angolan Renewable Energy Association (Asaer), promoted the conference that will take place until Wednesday, in Luanda, with this objective: "We want to disclose what is already being done and what conditions are necessary for the development of projects to continue, in particular with the participation of private companies, our objective is to create this debate", she explained.

The ALER leader stated that the Government took the initiative "and companies want to continue", considering that there is a favorable environment, but it is necessary to ensure that favorable conditions are in place for private investment to take place.

She warned in particular of the inability of the electricity supplier (ENDE) to collect debts from the final consumer, aggravating the risk, which will make the investment more expensive.

"As we all know the greater the risk, the greater the cost of the investment and the financiers have to have guarantees that this risk will be mitigated, this is a great challenge", she pointed out, adding that ALER is part of a working group with the government , together with Asaer to help mitigate this risk.

The next step will be to launch contests.

"At this moment, the State took the initiative and contracted companies directly. What we would like is for tenders to be launched so that there are competition conditions. When there is competition and transparency, prices go down, because there are many companies competing for the same service , for the same product", she maintained.

The ALER official said that a regulation on linked renewable production is also being prepared, applicable to the production of energy based on a renewable energy source, with a power greater than 10 megawatts, which will define all regulatory issues so that the contests.
