Germany announces eight million euros to support DRCongo refugees

UNHCR, the UN Agency for Refugees, announced a new contribution from the Government of the Federal Republic of Germany, in the amount of eight million euros, to support the assistance and protection program for refugees from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

In Angola, the German contribution will enable UNHCR to strengthen its registration and documentation activities, as well as basic health, education, protection, shelter, access to water and sanitation and initiatives aimed at promoting livelihoods, in the Refugee Settlement. A statement sent to VerAngola also states that, regionally, in addition to providing an emergency response, it also promotes the inclusion of refugees in national systems and seeks to strengthen self-sufficiency through education, vocational training and opportunities for livelihood and support for greater integration between refugee and host communities.

This contribution is part of the UNHCR's Regional Refugee Response Plan (RRRP) of the DRC, which aims to help 1.1 million DRC refugees in seven neighboring countries, in addition to the 4.4 million euros already offered. by Germany for the emergency response in 2021.
For more than a decade, the DRC - a country suffering one of the most difficult and long-lasting humanitarian crises in Africa - has generated hundreds of thousands of refugees who have been taken in across the African continent, including Angola (23,536), Burundi (79,662) , Republic of Congo (19,791), Rwanda (74,696), Uganda (573,406), United Republic of Tanzania (78,571) and Zambia (58,911).
