Covid-19: deaths in Africa exceed 160,000 and there are 53,704 more new cases

The number of deaths associated with covid-19 in Africa surpassed the 160,000 barrier, totaling 160,648 deaths, plus 929 in the last 24 hours, during which 53,704 new cases were registered, according to official regional data released this Thursday.

According to the African Union Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), the number infected in Africa since the start of the pandemic is 6,335,702, plus 53,704 in the last 24 hours.

The number of recovered is now 5,546,538, of which 33,112 were registered in the last 24 hours, according to the same source.

Southern Africa remains the most affected region on the continent, with 3,037,743 cases and 82,742 deaths associated with covid-19. This region is home to the country most affected by the pandemic, South Africa, which accounts for 2,327,472 cases and 68,192 deaths.

North Africa, which succeeds Southern Africa in the covid-19 numbers, reached 1,813,835 infected and 51,742 deaths associated with the disease.
East Africa has 772,843 infections and 16,364 deaths and the West Africa region has 510,974 cases and 6673 deaths.

Central Africa is the region of the continent with the fewest cases of infection and deaths: 200,307 cases and 3127 deaths, respectively.

Egypt, the second African country with more fatalities after South Africa, registers 16,465 deaths and 283,862 infected, followed by Tunisia, with 17,913 deaths and 555,997 cases, and Morocco, which accounts for the second highest number of infections in the entire continent, 566,356 cases, but fewer deaths than the two previous countries, with 9498 deaths associated with the disease.

Among the countries most affected are Ethiopia, with 4360 fatalities and 277,959 infections, and Algeria, with 3994 deaths and 157,005 infected.

In relation to Portuguese-speaking countries, Mozambique registers 1190 deaths and 103,713 cases of infection accumulated since the beginning of the pandemic, and Angola accounts for 973 deaths associated with the disease and 41,227 accumulated infections.

Cape Verde registers 297 deaths associated with the disease and 33,395 infections, Equatorial Guinea 123 deaths and 8848 cases, Guinea-Bissau registers 74 deaths and 4108 infected and São Tomé and Príncipe 37 deaths and 2413 infections.
