João Lourenço authorizes tender to supply water to 21 communes affected by drought

The President, João Lourenço, authorized the expenditure and formalized the opening of a public tender for intervention works in "small water supply systems" of 21 communes in the drought-affected Cunene province.

João Lourenço refers, in a presidential dispatch of July 20, consulted this Monday by Lusa, that the intervention works cover the small water supply systems in the municipalities of Cahama, Cuanhama, Curoca, Cuvelai, Namacunde and Ombadja.

The works comprise six lots and should cover the 21 communes that comprise the aforementioned municipalities.

Improving the storage capacity and increasing the coverage rate of water supply to the population are among the objectives of the said public tender, considering that the water supply system in Cunene "has been benefiting from a set of works".

Half a million people are being affected by the drought in Cunene province, southern Angola, as announced recently by the provincial governor, Gerdina Didalelwa, during the President's second visit to the town.

Lourenço visited Cunene during two days, on the 8th and 9th of this month, where he announced that the constraints for the construction of infrastructures to minimize the drought problem were overcome and assured the advancement of four projects.

The governor of Cunene is delegated the power to approve the pieces of the contract procedure, create the evaluation commission, as well as verify the validity and legality of all acts carried out within the scope of the public tender.

The presidential order also determines that the Ministry of Energy and Water "shall technically support" the process of implementation and management of the respective projects in conjunction with the government of Cunene and the Ministry of Finance "shall ensure the necessary financial resources.

Besides Cunene, the drought also affects the provinces of Cuando-Cubango, Namibe and Huila, all in southern Angola.
