General Kundi Paihama, former defense minister, died

Former Defense Minister Kundi Paihama died in the early hours of Friday, from illness, informed the vice president of the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA), Luísa Damião.

General Kundi Paihama, one of the emblematic figures of the MPLA, was born in the province of Huíla and died at the age of 75.

On the death of Kundi Paihama, the party vice president said that the MPLA loses "an intrepid militant defender of noble causes who has always served the country with a lot of dedication and determination".

"Angola loses an accomplished nationalist and politician, who has always performed the functions entrusted to her with zeal, selflessness and patriotic spirit," said Luísa Damião in statements to the radio.

His biography includes several political positions, the first as coordinator in the provinces of Huambo and Bié, held in 1976/1979, Minister of the Interior (1979/1980), Minister of State Security (1980/1981), Minister of Former Combatants and Veterans of the Fatherland (2010/2015).
The MPLA activist was also governor of the provinces of Luanda, Huíla, Benguela, Huambo, Cunene, was a deputy to the National Assembly and a member of the MPLA Central Committee.

In recent years, the general has dedicated himself to several businesses, including Plurijogos, a casino concessionaire, and Banco Angolano de Negócios e Comércio (BANC), which saw its license withdrawn by the National Bank of Angola for "serious problems" technicians ", placing the institution in" technical bankruptcy ".

The MPLA leader stressed that Kundi Paihama was "a strong pillar of the national liberation struggle, which embraced the MPLA cause from an early age".

"He was also an intrepid fighter who also made his contribution in the military area and is in fact a man who will serve as an example to the young generations of everything he has done for his country", he stressed.

For his part, the former MPLA secretary general, general Julião Mateus Paulo "Dino Matrosse", considered "the physical disappearance of comrade Kundi Paihama to be very sad".

"Comrade Kundi Paihama is one of the icons of our struggle for national liberation and successive foreign invasions in the country and after our independence the great contribution he made to the country and the nation in the ranks of the MPLA, started very early on to give his contribution and at this moment that we are living his death is a sadness for all those who were together and especially with me, we had a very close friendship ", he said.
