"The President of the Republic of Angola and also acting president of the African Union, João Lourenço, will be working in Brussels, Belgium, on Wednesday 25 June, in the context of a high-level meeting of the Global Vaccine Alliance, (...) an entity created 25 years ago to protect children around the world against infectious diseases through vaccination", said the Secretary of the President of the Republic for Institutional Communication and Press Affairs, Luís Fernando, in a video released by CIPRA and to which VerAngola had access.
According to the official, the head of state will leave for Brussels this Tuesday, arriving in the Belgian capital the following day.
On Wednesday, João Lourenço will participate in "a session on the upcoming agenda for Gavi, where key figures such as the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the European Council, António Costa, the President of the Gates Foundation, Bill Gates, and the President of the Gavi Board, Durão Barroso, are expected to speak.
"The Angolan head of state and leader of the African Union will also speak at the same meeting," the secretary added.
The meeting scheduled for this Wednesday in Brussels is "a major and decisive event for the future of Gavi, because it will be there that donors will make their promises of new contributions, Gavi itself will announce its next commitments and the countries supported by it, such as Angola, will share with those present their policies and commitments to increase their populations' access to the vaccination system," Luís Fernando concluded.
The summit aims to raise donations of nine billion dollars, earmarked for financing the period 2026 to 2030.
